Ardennes Road Trip: Namur to Bastogne (3 Days)

The Ardennes are the closest thing northern Europe has to a driving secret. Three days, 162 kilometres, and the roads spend most of it following rivers through forest that swallows the noise — which is exactly why two armies once fought over it in the snow.

Day 1 — Namur to Dinant along the Meuse (35 km)

The shortest day, and worth stretching. Leave Namur under its citadel and follow the Meuse south on the N92, with the river on one side and limestone cliffs on the other.

Dinant stacks itself into the rock: a bulbous collegiate church, a citadel reached by cable car or 408 steps, and a bridge lined with painted saxophones — Adolphe Sax was born here, and the town has never let anyone forget it.

Day 2 — Over to the Semois and Bouillon (64 km)

Inland and south through farmland that turns to forest. The reward is the Semois, a river so indecisive it loops back on itself all the way to France.

Bouillon sits inside one of those loops with its castle on the ridge above — the seat of Godfrey of Bouillon, who sold it to finance the First Crusade. It is a genuine medieval fortress rather than a restored one, and the rock it is cut into is the best part.

Day 3 — Into the forest to Bastogne (64 km)

East through the deep Ardennes to Bastogne, the town that held the crossroads through the winter of 1944 during the Battle of the Bulge.

The Mardasson Memorial and the war museum beside it are the reason most people come, and they are done with restraint. The forest around town still carries the shape of foxholes if you know where to look.

No tolls today — but check the date

Belgium charges no toll and no vignette for cars in 2026, and none of this route touches the one exception, the Liefkenshoek tunnel at Antwerp.

That is changing. A digital vignette is planned from May 2027, linked to the number plate rather than a sticker, expected at roughly €90 a year for an electric car and up to €125 for an older combustion one — and it will apply to foreign cars too. It still needs the regional parliaments and an EU compliance review, so treat it as planned rather than certain, and check before you travel if you are reading this later.

Fill up in Luxembourg

Bastogne is about half an hour from the Luxembourg border, and Luxembourg is the cheapest fuel in this corner of Europe by a wide margin — roughly 20 cents a litre under Belgium on petrol and over 30 on diesel when this was written.
