Reykjavik to Jökulsárlón Road Trip (4 Days)

Reykjavik to Jökulsárlón is Iceland’s classic south-coast drive: thundering waterfalls, black-sand beaches and a lagoon full of drifting icebergs — about 380 km one way along Route 1, the Ring Road. You drive on the right, and no part of this south route is tolled (the only toll tunnel, Vaðlaheiðargöng, is up north and not on this trip).

Day 1 — Reykjavik to Vík (190 km)

Pick up the car in Reykjavik and head east on Route 1. Stop at Seljalandsfoss, the waterfall you can walk behind, then Skógafoss a little further on. Watch for single-lane bridges — the first car to reach one has right of way, so slow down and give way. Sleep in or near Vík.

Day 2 — Reynisfjara and Vík

Spend the morning at Reynisfjara black-sand beach. The waves here are deadly: powerful sneaker waves surge far up the sand without warning, so keep well back from the water and never turn your back on the sea. Explore the basalt columns and Vík’s clifftop church before an easy afternoon.

Day 3 — Vík to Jökulsárlón (190 km)

The long, spectacular leg east past the Vatnajökull ice cap. Fuel stations are far apart out here — fill up in Vík and again at Kirkjubæjarklaustur. Arrive at Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon to watch icebergs calve and drift, then cross the road to Diamond Beach, where ice chunks glitter on black sand.

Day 4 — Back to Reykjavik

Return west on Route 1. Before you go, check road.is for road conditions and vedur.is for weather — wind and storms here are extreme, and gusts can rip a car door clean off, so hold doors tightly and never park facing the wind. Note: highland F-roads need a 4x4 and are not required for this Route 1 trip.
