Lisbon to Algarve Road Trip (4 Days)

A road trip from Lisbon down to the Algarve coast is the perfect blend of Portuguese culture and dramatic coastal scenery. With four days, you can pace yourselves, enjoying small towns and dramatic drives rather than simply rushing the distance.

Day 1 — Lisbon to Setúbal & Arrábida (Approx. 40-60 km)

Today’s focus is transition—leaving the intensity of Lisbon and heading toward the dramatic hills and coastal towns. Cross the Tagus and drive south to the Arrábida Natural Park via the scenic N379-1, a cliff road with stunning views over the coast — take it slow, as it is narrow and winding. Base yourself in Setúbal for the night: an easy, well-priced starting point for the next day’s drive inland, and a great spot for grilled fish on the waterfront.

Day 2 — Setúbal to Évora (Approx. 100-130 km)

Head east and into the interior plateau (the Alentejo region). The drive today is through changing landscape, moving from coast to expansive, golden plains. The primary route will likely take you via major national roads, which are generally well-paved. Once you reach Évora, check into your accommodation immediately, as the old town requires no car and parking is limited to dedicated lots outside the historic center. Dedicate the afternoon to wandering Évora’s Roman temples and the Chapel of Bones—this area is manageable on foot and completely worth the detour.

Day 3 — Évora to Lagos/Portimão (Approx. 100-130 km)

Today is the longest driving day, but it is crucial for reaching the heart of the Algarve. You will transition through increasingly picturesque landscapes, passing through farming towns and smaller coastal communities. The main roads remain excellent, but keep an eye out for local signs indicating the best stops for lunch. Unlike the initial days, the roads here are designed for the destination, making the driving enjoyable. Once you arrive in the Algarve, navigate immediately to your hotel’s parking lot, as central parking in the main towns (like Lagos) fills up very quickly.

Day 4 — Exploring the Algarve Coast (Local Driving)

Today is about exploring the destination. Instead of a major road trip, focus on the scenic coastal routes. Consider driving between Lagos and Sagres, utilizing the stunning N262 road which hugs the coast. This route offers dramatic cliff views and excellent photo opportunities. Remember that while the roads are beautiful, they can be narrow and winding, so maintain slow speeds. Plan to explore a specific beach (e.g., Praia do Camilo) and enjoy a meal right on the waterfront. You may encounter toll roads (SCUTs) on some faster coastal connectors, so having a reliable payment method or physical cash on hand is advised.
