Porto to the Douro Valley Road Trip (2 Days)

Porto to the Douro Valley is a short, deeply rewarding drive into the oldest demarcated wine region on earth — the terraced home of port. In roughly 120 km you trade the Atlantic city for river bends, hillside vineyards and one of the most celebrated driving roads in the world.

Day 1 — Porto to Peso da Régua (100 km)

Pick up the car in Porto and remember you drive on the right here. The quickest way east is the A4 motorway, but be aware it uses electronic tolls only — there are no cash booths. Rent a car fitted with a toll transponder (the Via Verde device) or register your plate for electronic tolls before you set off, or you risk fines in the post weeks later.

Once past Amarante the landscape opens into vineyard-covered hills. Aim for Peso da Régua, the historic heart of the port trade on the north bank of the Douro. Visit the Museu do Douro, walk the riverfront, and if you have time book a short river cruise — many depart from the Régua quay. Sleep in Régua or at a quinta (wine estate) nearby; several open their guest rooms to travellers.

Day 2 — The N222 to Pinhão and the quintas (20 km)

This is the reason you came. The N222 between Peso da Régua and Pinhão is regularly voted one of the best drives on the planet — a slow, winding ribbon that hugs the river past terrace after terrace of vines. It is only about 20 km, so take it gently: the road is narrow and twisting, with blind bends and the occasional tractor. Pull in at the miradouros (viewpoints) for the classic photos of the valley folding down to the water.

Pinhão itself is tiny but charming — don’t miss the azulejo tile panels in the railway station depicting the harvest. From here, book a tasting at a quinta: estates like Quinta do Bomfim, Quinta do Seixo or Quinta da Roêda welcome visitors for tours and port tastings (reserve ahead, especially in summer). A river cruise from the Pinhão pier is a lovely, unhurried way to see the terraces from the water. Then return west toward Porto, again via the A4 electronic tolls.
