The Upper Middle Rhine Valley — the “Romantic Rhine” — is a UNESCO World Heritage cultural landscape packed with more hill castles than almost anywhere in Europe. Between Rüdesheim and Koblenz the river cuts a steep gorge through slate hills terraced with Riesling vines. It is only about 65 km, so two unhurried days are plenty for castles, wine and the odd ferry.

Germany drives on the right and has no car tolls on its roads. One quirk shapes this whole trip: there are no road bridges across the Rhine within the gorge between Wiesbaden/Mainz and Koblenz. To switch banks you take a car ferry — for example at Bingen–Rüdesheim, Niederheimbach or Boppard — each a short hop for a few euros. Pick up the car in Frankfurt, about an hour east.

Day 1 — Rüdesheim to St. Goar (35 km)

Start in Rüdesheim, wander the tiny Drosselgasse, then ride the cable car up to the Niederwald monument for the first gorge view. Cross toward Bingen or follow the left bank down to Bacharach, ringed by medieval walls beneath Stahleck castle (now a youth hostel). Round the bend at the Lorelei, the steep slate cliff of legend, pass Oberwesel and reach St. Goar, below Rheinfels Castle — the largest ruin on the Rhine. Sleep in St. Goar or across the water in St. Goarshausen.

Day 2 — St. Goar to Koblenz (30 km)

Continue to Boppard, set on the river’s great loop, then on to Braubach for Marksburg Castle — the only hill castle on the Middle Rhine never destroyed, so its rooms survive intact. Finish at Koblenz, where the Deutsches Eck marks the meeting of the Mosel and the Rhine; a cable car lifts you to the Ehrenbreitstein fortress above.

Costs

Use the cost calculator to price fuel and nights for your dates. Expect roughly €80–150 per night for accommodation and modest fuel for the short 65 km. Castle entries run about €6–12, car-ferry crossings a few euros each, and the cable cars at Rüdesheim and Koblenz around €10–16 return. There are no road tolls. Booking rooms early pays off in the autumn wine season.
