Larnaca to Paphos via Troodos Road Trip (3 Days)

Cyprus is the far southeastern corner of the European Union, closer to Beirut than to Athens, and it stays warm enough to drive with the window down when most of Europe is scraping ice off the windscreen. Roughly 330 km from Larnaca to Paphos crosses the whole island the interesting way — up into the Troodos mountains and back down to the sea — and takes three days without ever feeling rushed.

One thing to sort out before anything else: Cyprus drives on the left. It is the only place on this site where that is true, a leftover from British administration, and rental cars are right-hand drive with the gearstick on your left. Give yourself the first hour on quiet roads. The motorways (A1, A5, A6) are toll-free and fast; the mountain roads are narrow, well surfaced and full of hairpins. And the surprise most visitors do not plan for: Troodos gets snow. Mount Olympus reaches 1,952 m and has a small ski area, so a January drive can start on a beach and end in a snowfield — check the mountain forecast, not the coastal one.

Day 1 — Larnaca into the mountains (120 km)

Start in Larnaca with the Salt Lake on the edge of town, where flamingos overwinter in their thousands, and the Hala Sultan Tekke mosque on its shore. Then head inland and climb.

Stop at Lefkara, a stone village in the foothills known for its lace and silverwork, before the road narrows and starts winding upward. Continue into the Troodos range proper, past Kakopetria, and sleep in or near Troodos village. On the way, break for Agios Nikolaos tis Stegis — one of the ten painted churches of the Troodos region on the UNESCO World Heritage list: modest barn-roofed buildings from the outside, covered in Byzantine frescoes within.

Day 2 — Over the top and down to the sea (110 km)

Spend the morning high: Mount Olympus, the forest roads, and a second painted church if the first one hooked you — Panagia tou Araka and Asinou are both within reach.

Then drop south through the wine country. Omodos is the village most visitors stop in, with a cobbled square and a monastery, and the road down from there runs through terraced vineyards to the coast. Join the sea at Kourion, a Greco-Roman city on a cliff above the water with a theatre still used for performances, then follow the coast west past Petra tou Romiou — the sea stack the myth names as the birthplace of Aphrodite — into Paphos. Overnight there.

Day 3 — Paphos and the Akamas coast (100 km)

Give the morning to the Paphos Archaeological Park, another UNESCO site, where Roman villas keep some of the best surviving floor mosaics in the eastern Mediterranean, and the Tombs of the Kings cut into the rock north of town.

In the afternoon drive up the coast to the Akamas peninsula: Coral Bay, the fishing harbour at Latchi, and the Baths of Aphrodite at the road’s end. The sealed road stops there. The track onward into the Akamas is rough, and standard rental agreements normally forbid it — walk the coast path instead and drive back to Paphos for the night.
