Furka, Grimsel & Susten: The Three-Pass Loop from Andermatt (2 Days)

This is the classic Swiss three-pass loop, linking the Furka, Grimsel and Susten in a single unforgettable ride from Andermatt. You cross three passes above 2,100 m, past a glacier and a string of dam lakes, on smooth, engineered roads that were made for two wheels. You drive on the right. All three passes are seasonal, usually open from around June to October; you do not need the motorway vignette for the pass roads themselves. Start early to enjoy the empty switchbacks before the day-trippers arrive.

Day 1 — Andermatt to Grimsel Pass (55 km)

From Andermatt, climb the Furka Pass (2,429 m) — the road made famous by the car chase in Goldfinger — with the tongue of the Rhône Glacier above the hamlet of Gletsch. Drop briefly, then swing up the Grimsel Pass (2,164 m) through a bare granite landscape of reservoir lakes. Descend the far side to Meiringen to sleep.

Day 2 — Meiringen to Andermatt (55 km)

From Meiringen and Innertkirchen, ride the graceful, well-graded Susten Pass (2,224 m), one of the smoothest alpine roads in Switzerland, back east through Wassen to close the loop at Andermatt.

Costs

Use the cost calculator to price fuel and nights for your exact dates. Switzerland is expensive, so consider basing in Meiringen or a valley town rather than at the passes, and carry some cash for the small kiosks at the top. The passes are high and can be cold or wet even in midsummer — pack proper layers and check that all three are open before you ride.
