Bergen to Geirangerfjord Road Trip (5 Days)

Bergen to the Geirangerfjord is the classic Norwegian fjord road trip: deep blue water, waterfalls straight off the cliffs and the hairpin drama of Trollstigen. In under 400 km you cross several fjords by car ferry and finish at a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Norway drives on the right. Your rental should be registered for AutoPASS, the electronic toll system (bompenger) that reads number plates automatically — confirm this with the rental company so charges bill straight to your agreement. Fuel and EV charging are widely available but plan ahead in the mountains, and expect fast-changing weather.

Day 1 — Bergen and the Hardangerfjord (150 km)

Spend the morning in Bergen — the Bryggen wharf and the fish market — then pick up the car and head east toward the Hardangerfjord. Follow the water past orchards and the mighty Vøringsfossen waterfall. Sleep around Eidfjord or Ulvik.

Day 2 — Over the mountains to Sognefjord country (110 km)

Climb through wild highland scenery and drop toward the Sognefjord, Norway’s longest and deepest. This day involves a car ferry across an arm of the fjord — pay through the AutoPASS ferry app (AutoPASS for ferje) or on board. Overnight near Skei or Byrkjelo.

Day 3 — Toward Åndalsnes and Trollstigen (140 km)

Head north through valleys and past glacier arms. Note that Trollstigen and the high mountain passes are seasonal — they typically open late May and close with the first snow, so check status before you set out. If open, the drive up the serpentine road with its eleven hairpins is unforgettable. Sleep in Åndalsnes or Valldal.

Day 4 — Valldal to Geiranger (60 km)

A short but spectacular day. Take the Linge–Eidsdal car ferry (again via AutoPASS), then climb the Ørnesvingen (Eagle Road) for the first sight of the Geirangerfjord and the Seven Sisters waterfall. Detour up to the Dalsnibba viewpoint at 1,500 m for the panorama. Overnight in Geiranger.

Day 5 — Geiranger and the way back

Take a morning fjord cruise beneath the waterfalls, then begin the return toward Bergen or on to an airport at Ålesund. Expect more ferries and tolls on the way — keep the AutoPASS app handy.
