The Atlantic Ocean Road: Kristiansund to Molde (3 Days)

Short but unforgettable, this drive links the coastal towns of Kristiansund and Molde via the Atlantic Ocean Road (Atlanterhavsveien) — a ribbon of bridges and causeways that hops across skerries between the mainland and the open sea. You drive on the right. The distances are small, so this is a trip to savour slowly over a few days, with weather that can swing from calm blue to dramatic storm surf.

Day 1 — Kristiansund to Averøy (30 km)

Explore the island town of Kristiansund, then head to the island of Averøy via the undersea Atlantic Tunnel (Atlanterhavstunnelen), which is tolled. Averøy is your base for the famous road.

Day 2 — The Atlantic Ocean Road (10 km, all day)

Drive the 8.3 km Atlanterhavsveien slowly, stopping at the viewpoints and fishing spots. The showpiece is the curving Storseisundet Bridge, which seems to launch into the sky. There are marked laybys and a boardwalk at Eldhusøya — the road itself is toll-free.

Day 3 — Averøy to Molde (60 km)

Continue south to Molde, “the town of roses”, set on the fjord under a panorama of peaks. From here you can carry on to Trollstigen and the fjords, or return your car. A short ferry may be part of the coastal route — check timetables.
