Germany’s Romantic Road (Romantische Straße) runs about 460 km from Würzburg down to Füssen, linking walled medieval towns, vineyards and, at its end, the fairy-tale Neuschwanstein castle. You drive on the right, and ordinary German roads carry no car tolls. Four days lets you wander the old towns properly.

Day 1 — Würzburg to Rothenburg (110 km)

Start at Würzburg and its baroque Residenz, then reach the perfectly preserved walled town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber. Walk the ramparts at dusk when the day-trippers leave.

Day 2 — Rothenburg to Nördlingen (90 km)

Through pretty Dinkelsbühl to Nördlingen, a town built inside a meteorite crater — climb the “Daniel” church tower for the perfectly circular view over the walls.

Day 3 — Nördlingen to Landsberg am Lech (150 km)

Roman Augsburg, one of Germany’s oldest cities, then the colourful riverside town of Landsberg am Lech.

Day 4 — Landsberg to Füssen and Neuschwanstein (110 km)

Reach Füssen and the twin castles of Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau above the Alpine lakes. Timed castle tickets sell out — book them online well in advance.

Costs

Use the cost calculator to price fuel and nights for your exact dates. There are no road tolls to budget for; the main extras are fuel, accommodation and castle tickets — pre-book Neuschwanstein. Bavarian towns are busy in summer, so reserve beds early.
