Paris to the Loire Valley Road Trip (3 Days)

Paris to the Loire Valley is the classic short escape into French history: Renaissance châteaux, formal gardens and crisp Loire wines, all within a couple of hours of the capital. In France you drive on the right, and the A10 south is a fast toll motorway (péage) — take a ticket or tap a card at the booths.

Day 1 — Paris to Amboise (230 km)

Pick up the car on the edge of Paris rather than fighting city-centre traffic, then head south on the A10. The tolls are unavoidable but the road is quick, so you can be in the Loire by lunch. Base yourself in Amboise — a walkable riverside town with the royal château above it and Clos Lucé, the manor where Leonardo da Vinci spent his final years. Book your château tickets online ahead in summer; queues at the gate can eat an hour.

Day 2 — Chambord and Blois

Drive up to Chambord, the largest and most extravagant château in the valley, famous for its double-helix staircase attributed to Leonardo. Arrive early — it is vast and deserves a couple of hours. On the way back, stop in Blois, whose royal château stacks four centuries of architecture around one courtyard. End the day with a Vouvray tasting near Amboise.

Day 3 — Chenonceau, Villandry and Tours

Start at Chenonceau, the graceful château arched right across the river Cher — the most photographed in France, so go at opening. Then the Renaissance gardens of Villandry, laid out in geometric beds best seen from the terrace. Drop the car in Tours or drive back to Paris on the A10. If time allows, a glass of Chinon red is the perfect send-off.
