Ljubljana to Lake Bled Road Trip: The Long Way (3 Days)

Ljubljana to Lake Bled is 55 km on the motorway and takes 40 minutes. This is the 130 km version, which takes three days and goes the wrong way round on purpose — through a medieval market town, over to the lake nobody photographs, and only then to the one everybody does.

You drive on the right. Slovenia has no toll booths on its motorways: you need an e-vinjeta, bought online or at a petrol station and linked to your plate. A weekly one is €16 for a car. Rentals picked up in Slovenia usually have one already — ask, because driving the A2 without it is a fine, not a toll.

Day 1 — Ljubljana to Kranj via Škofja Loka (50 km)

Leave the city on the old road rather than the A2. Škofja Loka is 25 km out and is the reason to: a walled medieval town under a castle, with a stone Capuchin Bridge over the Sora that has stood since the 14th century. It takes an hour to walk and most people driving to Bled have never heard of it.

Carry on north to Kranj for the night — the old town sits on a rock between two river canyons, and beds cost a fraction of Bled’s.

Day 2 — Kranj to Lake Bohinj (52 km)

Head into Triglav National Park and past Bled without stopping — you will get it tomorrow. Lake Bohinj is 26 km further, three times the size of Bled, ringed by mountains and almost empty by comparison.

Two things fill the afternoon: the Savica waterfall, a short steep walk from the road at the far end of the lake, and the Vogel cable car up the south wall for the view back down over the whole valley. Parking around the lake is paid and limited in July and August — arrive early or park at Ribčev Laz and walk.

Day 3 — Bohinj to Lake Bled (28 km)

Come back down the valley and stop first at the Vintgar Gorge, north of Bled, where a wooden walkway is pinned to the rock above the Radovna river. Entry is a timed all-in-one pass at €15 for adults and €5 for children, which covers parking and the shuttle — buy it online before you go in summer.

Then Bled itself. The island in the middle is reached only by boat: a traditional pletna is about €20 per person return and gives you around 40 minutes ashore and 99 steps up to the church. Bled Castle on the cliff above is the other half of the postcard. Park in a paid lot on arrival and leave the car there — the lake road is a walking and cycling loop, and it is only 6 km round.
