It runs inside the Røros Circumference — the 45 km radius granted to the copper works in 1646, and part of the UNESCO World Heritage site since 2010.
The mines worked for 333 years and closed in 1977. The roads that served them are still here, still gravel, and the town they fed is World Heritage.
May I actually drive it?
Yes. Fv 6538 is a public road with an owner and published closures — not a track across open land, which is banned or tightly restricted in most of western and northern Europe. Obey the signs at the barrier: a road that is open in August can be shut in October, and the dates are decided locally each year.
