Finished in 1894 as the main link between eastern Norway and Nordfjord. When the new Strynefjellsveien opened in 1977, nobody closed the old one.
A road that was superseded and simply left standing. 130 years of weather, the same gravel, the same stone culverts — and the tunnel that replaced it running underneath.
May I actually drive it?
Yes. Fv 258 is a public road with an owner and published closures — not a track across open land, which is banned or tightly restricted in most of western and northern Europe. Obey the signs at the barrier: a road that is open in August can be shut in October, and the dates are decided locally each year.
