Zagreb to Zadar Road Trip via Plitvice Lakes (3 Days)

Zagreb to Zadar packs Croatia’s best into one short trip: the UNESCO-listed waterfalls of Plitvice, easy motorway driving and a Roman coastal city famous for its sunsets. In under 300 km you go from the capital to the Adriatic, with the country’s most spectacular national park on the way.

Day 1 — Zagreb to Plitvice Lakes (135 km)

Pick up the car in Zagreb and drive south on the A1 motorway. Croatia drives on the right, and the A1 uses distance-based tolls — take a ticket as you enter and pay when you exit. Leave the motorway near Karlovac for the last stretch to Plitvice Lakes National Park. Book your timed-entry ticket online in advance — summer slots sell out and entry is only allowed at your chosen time. Sleep in one of the villages just outside the park (Rastovača or Mukinje) so you can start early the next day.

Day 2 — Plitvice Lakes National Park

Spend the full day in the park. Follow the marked wooden boardwalk trails between the terraced lakes and waterfalls — stay on the boardwalks and note that swimming is forbidden anywhere in the lakes. The upper lakes are quieter; the lower lakes hold the big Veliki Slap waterfall. Electric boats and shuttle buses are included with your ticket. In the afternoon, drive down toward the coast and overnight near Zadar.

Day 3 — The coast and Zadar (Krka optional)

If you have the morning, detour to Krka National Park further south, where — unlike Plitvice — swimming rules are more relaxed near Skradinski Buk. Otherwise head straight into Zadar. Explore the Roman forum ruins, then walk the waterfront to hear the Sea Organ and see the Sun Salutation light installation. Stay for the sunset over the islands — it is famously one of the most beautiful in Europe. Drop the car in Zadar.
