The Albanian Alps: Shkodër to Theth (Mountain Adventure, 2 Days)

One of Europe’s last wild corners: the road from Shkodër up into the Accursed Mountains (Bjeshkët e Nemuna / Prokletije) to the stone village of Theth. The road has been improved and is now largely paved, but it climbs a steep, twisting mountain pass with rough patches — a higher-clearance car or SUV is the confident choice, and you’ll want it for side tracks. You drive on the right. This is a summer route: the high Thore pass is blocked by snow in winter, so go roughly late May to October.

Day 1 — Shkodër to Theth (75 km)

Leave lakeside Shkodër and climb into the mountains, over the Thore pass with its hairpins and huge views into the Accursed Mountains. Drop into the valley of Theth, a cluster of stone houses under sheer peaks. Visit the Theth waterfall and the old lock-in tower, and stay in a family-run guesthouse (half-board is the norm and excellent).

Day 2 — The Blue Eye and the valley (short walks)

Hike to the Blue Eye of Theth (Syri i Kaltër), a vivid turquoise spring, or start the classic day-hike over the ridge toward Valbona. Drive the mountain road back to Shkodër, or arrange a transfer if you’d rather not repeat the pass.
