The Peloponnese packs more history and coastline into one drive than almost anywhere in Greece: ancient theatres, Byzantine ghost towns, mountain villages and a fortress rising from the sea — all under two hours from Athens.

Day 1 — Nafplio (base)

Greece’s prettiest town, Nafplio, beneath its Venetian fortress — the ideal base for the eastern Peloponnese.

Day 2 — Mycenae and Epidaurus (90 km)

The Bronze-Age citadel of Mycenae and the vast, acoustically perfect ancient theatre of Epidaurus.

Day 3 — Into the mountains to Mystras (120 km)

West over the mountains to Mystras, a hillside of Byzantine churches and palaces above Sparta.

Day 4 — The Mani (100 km)

The wild Mani peninsula of stone tower-houses and empty coves.

Day 5 — Monemvasia

The Monemvasia sea-castle — a whole medieval town hidden on the far side of a rock joined to the shore by a causeway.

Tolls and costs

Greece has motorway tolls on the main routes from Athens, but the Peloponnese back roads are toll-free. Roads are winding in the mountains — allow time. Use the cost calculator for your dates.
